Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica to parents from rural Jamaica (Delveland, Westmoreland), Mario Guthrie, known on stage as ‘Mario Evon’, always dreamed of being an entertainer but never imagined it would happen.
Growing up with an older brother with eclectic music taste and parents who listened to a wide range of music, Mario developed musical influences such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bob Marley, Janet Jackson, to Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, Stevie Wonder, Beres Hammond, Donny Hathaway, and now John Legend, Tarrus Riley, Robin Thicke, India Arie amongst others.
At the age of 7 years, Evon would start out singing on the Mona Prep Choir, which then led to him singing on the Campion College Choir in high school, then the University Singers in University. From the high school singing years emerged a group called ‘The Choir Boyz’, which was a Campion College Choir tradition for the talented R&B/Pop singers of the group. Former members of this group would include three of the four members of T.O.K. Evon along with six other male choristers would take this group to another level performing more regularly at corporate functions, funerals and weddings. In around December 2003, Mario would then branch off into singing solo at weddings, having now sang at over 25 weddings.
Doing sciences in high school streamlined Evon into the University of the West Indies, Mona, to do Natural Sciences for a year, and eventually a Medical degree. Being deferred into the Medical faculty, Mario had a year off from school and chose to join the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company (JMTC), which landed him a role as the understudy for ‘Timon’ in the local production of “The Lion King”. Soon followed a lead role as ‘Daniel’ in The Company Limited’s production of “Once on this Island”, directed by Alwyn Bully. Evon shared the stage with Alwyn Scott, Velia Espeut and the late John Jones. Already accepted into medicine, a battle would start in his mind between a passion for performing, and a drive to fulfill his academic desires.
It came as no surprise that while at UWI Mario would successfully join the best choral performance group at the University and in the Caribbean, The University Singers. The University of the West Indies (UWI) Singers would become his home where he would hone his talents of singing and stage performance. While in UWI Singers, Mario had numerous lead parts and had the opportunity to travel overseas with the group to the Caribbean as well as the Unites States.
Evon completed his medical degree, internship and 2 years of full-time medical service to Jamaica while still creating and taking on performance opportunities. Networking created opportunities in the local industry, landing him gigs doing studio and live background vocals for artistes such as the Rocky 5 Band, Stevie Face, Camar (aka Flava Unit), Benjy Myaz, Cezar and Alaine.
Instead of taking the next step to specialize in a particular medical field, Evon then decided to audition for the world acclaimed Berklee College of Music, where he would be granted a partial scholarship. Evon is now completing a degree in Music Business and Songwriting, while trying to make a name as a recording artiste both locally and internationally.
While at Berklee, Mario has shared the stage with Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as world acclaimed producer, Don Was. Locally Mario has performed at Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival (Ocean Spray Stage as a background singer for Rocky Five; 2006), the Christopher’s Jazz Bar (2008/2009), on TVJ Smile Jamaica (Aug 2008), and the Jamaica Jazz and Blues 2009 Talent stage as a solo artist. Most recently he opened on the Jamaica Jazz and Blues 2010 Main Stage for the likes of Marion Hall (aka Lady Saw), Jon Secada, Hall and Oates and the legendary Gladys Knight.
The young artiste is currently in the process of writing and recording songs for his very first album, and returns home between semesters to remain connected to its wonderful culture, as well as work as a medical doctor.
